Improving production efficiency and eliminating wastage is essential in safety-critical manufacturing industries like automotive, aerospace and electronics. The manufacturing industry is under significant pressure from customers on both cost, product features and quality. Especially for the last aspect, there is a huge need of technologies able to monitor the manufacturing line of critical components such as turbine blades to reduce the recall costs. Gold standard inspection systems present poor and accuracy that lead to increased recall costs. MS3D has developed the Blade Inspection System (BIS), a 3D in-line system for real-time inspection of aircraft’s engines turbine blades during the manufacturing process. The product can be used in several steps of the manufacturing process and it gives immediate feedback to correct defects and avoid manufacturing of bad parts. A customizable mechanical platform including optical sensors and laser scanners scans the blade generating more than 20M data points with high accuracy. A 3D specific software is included to perform robust geometry analysis and surface defect identification. This results in fast inspection (30s), high accuracy (2μm for geometrical features, 2-4μm for form defects), increased level of monitoring and high-quality feedback.
