Since the introduction of the bale wrapping system in the mid 1980’s, baled silage has become the most common and convenient way to store silage and hay across Europe. Hundreds of millions bales are wrapped every summer, but hay and silage storage is confronted by serious challenges that hinder farmers’ productivity.
Storage losses range between 10% to nearly 40% in many situations and are primarily dependent on the quality of the bale wrap. Oxygen and moisture can seep into the bale, causing mould. The number of film layers used to wrap bales is an important factor: experts recommend a minimum 6 layers, but according to a recent UK survey, only one third of farmers apply 6 layers of film. This is mainly due to cost considerations, a short-sighted approach that can compromise the whole silage season. Such losses are expensive: hay costs between €0.02 and €0.07 per pound of dry matter, more than double the cost of the same amount of nutrients from pasture.
EQ Supreme by RapFast is the cost-effective, ultra-thin silage stretch wrap able to completely eliminate feed losses due to mould. Employing the very latest polymers and film manufacturing technology, EQ Supreme is the first stretch wrap to completely exclude air so lactic acid fermentation can take place within the bale, leaving a feed rich in vitamins and carotene while completely eliminating spoilage.
EQ Supreme optimises strength, puncture and tear resistance, elasticity, UV stability, and the ability to cling in all circumstances, to provide superior performance. At only 18 μm thick, EQ Supreme is thinner than traditional stretch wraps, but provides a better air barrier thanks to a unique resin blend and innovative production method. This means a cost-saving, better-performing film creating less plastic waste.
