LAYER® – Development of an organic photovoltaic module that generates energy from ambient light
Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are one of the most important electrochemical energy storage systems for IoT devices. However, lithium mining is extremely damaging to the environment as it uses ca.500k gallons of water per metric ton of lithium and it harms the soil and causes air contamination. LIBs carbon emissions range from 59-119 kg CO2-eq/kWh and are difficult to recycle. There is a compelling need for an alternative energy source for IoTs so that their dependence on LIBs is reduced.
Dracula Technologies off LAYER®, the world’s 1st shaped Organic Photovoltaic (OPV) module produced through inkjet printing that can effectively generate energy from ambient light and is specifically designed for IoT devices, such as smart home tools. Smart home devices installed with LAYER® technology are automatically charged under standard indoor illumination conditions and low light conditions (under 50lux) eliminating the need for cables behind walls and changing batteries. LAYER® while being cost-effective, does not pose any risk to the environment.
